The Ireland in Arabic Organization (IIA) expresses full solidarity with migrant rights groups in opposing the Iri government’s proposal to require asylum seekers to make financial contributions toward their own upkeep. The organization joins the call for the government to reconsider this plan, which has raised concerns among migrant rights advocates in the Mid-West.
Prime Minister Simon Harris stated that the government is considering this proposal based on the financial circumstances of asylum seekers, describing it as a “common-sense approach.” However, Doras, a prominent migrant support group, has strongly criticized the plan, highlighting the uncertainties surrounding work permits and the limited employment opportunities for asylum seekers. John Lannon, CEO of Doras, emphasized that many asylum seekers arrive in Ireland with very few resources, making the proposal deeply unfair.
The Ireland in Arabic Organization (IIA) shares these concerns and urges the government to ensure that policies affecting asylum seekers are grounded in fairness and compassion, taking into account their often vulnerable financial situations.
